Riot Games unveiled League of Legends Classic, a new version of the game featuring patches from its early seasons, closest to the third season. The announcement came just before the Mid-Season Invitational 2026 final, with the game set to release on July 29, 2026.
The community has reacted with cautious optimism, awaiting details on which specific era of the game will be recreated. Veteran players note that nostalgia can be misleading, as early versions of the game had many imbalances and controversial decisions. Examples include AP Master Yi, Garen with six Sunfire Cape, old rune and item systems, chaotic role distribution, and unbalanced champions like Sion, Ryze, and Urgot.
Despite these imbalances, the early period laid the foundation for the game’s future success with fewer champions and more flexible mechanics. Early versions of LoL are often compared to the ‘Wild West,’ a time when players invented unconventional tactics and approaches that are no longer possible in the current balanced game. Riot Games aims to recreate this atmosphere in LoL Classic while avoiding past mistakes.
