The European Commission has launched an investigation into ten gaming companies over potential consumer protection violations. Companies under review include Activision Blizzard, Crytek, InnoGames, King, Mojang Studios, Plarium, Playrix, Riot Games, Supercell, and Ubisoft.
Games being examined include Diablo Immortal, Call of Duty Mobile, Valorant, Minecraft, Candy Crush Saga, and others. Regulators suspect companies use manipulative practices to push users toward in-game purchases.
Identified issues include hiding real costs via virtual currency, poor odds transparency, difficult refund processes, and artificial scarcity. The European Commission is also considering additional measures such as passport age verification and cracking down on private servers.
These potential requirements could increase development costs and complicate the creation process for studios.
