The UK government plans to restrict voice chat access in video games for users under 16 years old. These new rules are expected to take effect in the spring as part of a broader ban on social media for minors.
Online Safety Minister Ian Murray stated that players will still be able to find random teammates. However, they will not be able to talk to strangers in in-game chat.
The organization Gamer’s Voice criticized the initiative. Representative Tom Shannon emphasized that video games help youth make friends, teamwork, and communicate through shared interests.
Gamer’s Voice proposed allowing access to communication features only after age verification.
