Esports analyst Thorin has criticized the current state of analytics studios at major tournaments, arguing they are losing value due to excessive control and misperceptions by tournament operators. In a recent statement, Thorin claimed some operators undervalue these studios, potentially leading to their reduction or elimination.
“I sense from behind-the-scenes that many tournament operators don’t highly value analytics studios and could theoretically reduce them significantly or eliminate them entirely,” Thorin said.
Thorin also highlighted the crucial role of producers in shaping broadcasts, noting their influence on future invitations. He argued that excessive control removes the spontaneity and magic of live studio interactions, which are essential for engaging broadcasts.
“The producer is the bottleneck of the broadcast. If you don’t adapt to their vision, it can affect your future invitations, even if they don’t make decisions directly. When there’s too much control, the studio’s magic disappears-improvisation, reactions to others’ words, the ability to seize the moment and create a live broadcast,” Thorin explained.
Additionally, Thorin challenged the belief that audiences demand deep tactical analysis, suggesting it is overrated. He pointed out that not all former professionals transition well into analyst roles due to a lack of media experience.
“The idea that viewers massively want deep tactical analysis is greatly overrated. People often say they’re interested, but in reality, they rarely watch such content. Not every ex-pro automatically becomes a good analyst. Often, they don’t understand the media side of the work and lack content creation experience,” Thorin added.
Thorin contrasted this with traditional sports, where analytics studios are a full part of the show, unlike in esports.
