Original PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi believes the console industry faces a genuine threat from artificial intelligence. Future AI platforms could completely eliminate the need for dedicated gaming hardware as technology evolves.

High costs remain a major hurdle for traditional gaming setups. Modern gaming devices and personal computers have become prohibitively expensive for average consumers.

“Right now these devices are very expensive. This is an unhealthy situation. A PC costs as much as a car. Why do we keep moving in this direction?” Ken Kutaragi said.

Cloud-based AI systems operating via servers and networks could serve as a potential replacement for traditional consoles. Kutaragi left PlayStation nearly 20 years ago and emphasized that his views do not necessarily reflect Sony’s official corporate position.

“Maybe a time will come when we no longer need consoles. This is a very real threat,” Ken Kutaragi stated.

The broader gaming industry continues shifting toward greater artificial intelligence usage in software development alongside a steady decline in physical media.
