Brazil’s president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva signed a decree banning online bookmakers and betting services on September 25. The new restriction also applies to the advertising and sponsorship of such companies across the country.

This sudden decision threatens Brazilian esports, as betting companies represent a primary source of funding for competitive esports and sports projects. Bookmakers have until October 5 to remove all promotional materials and sponsorship branding from their platforms.

Websites and applications of betting services are scheduled to be blocked starting October 6. The ban is currently implemented as a temporary measure via a government act, with its ultimate future depending on the ongoing legislative process.
